2012 Analysis

Bangladesh voted against the resolutions on Sri Lanka and Iran, and abstained on the establishment of the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on Belarus.Bangladesh was generally supportive of the Council's action on Syria. Bangladesh did not, however, sign on to the joint statement calling for the Security Council to refer the Syrian case to the ICC. It did not support any of the key joint statements made at the Council on Eritrea, Bahrain, or other country situations.

Bangladesh voted in favor of all the resolutions focusing on the human rights situation in Palestine and other occupied Arab territories.

Bangladesh co-sponsored 12 country-specific resolutions under agenda items 1, 7 and 10 of the Council. However, it did not co-sponsor any resolutions under agenda item 4 on situations of concern.

Bangladesh rarely spoke during the Council's debates on country situations under agenda items 2, 4 and 10. When Bangladesh did choose to speak, as it did on Sudan and Belarus, it was only to praise the concerned state rather than express concern about human rights violations.
