Faso had a mixed voting record on country situations in 2014, a step back from
its improving record in previous cycles.
Progress stalled in 2014 regarding Burkina Faso’s voting record on country resolutions. Burkina Faso moved from supporting to abstaining on the resolution renewing the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on Belarus. Burkina Faso abstained on the new resolution on Ukraine under Item 10, while maintaining its abstentions on the Iran and Sri Lanka resolutions. Burkina Faso continued to support all resolutions on Syria and the North Korea resolution. By increasing its abstentions on country resolutions under Items 2, 4 and 10, Burkina Faso ceded its position as one of the African countries with the strongest voting record on country situations.
Burkina Faso voted in favor of the resolutions on the human rights situation in Palestine and other occupied Arab territories (OPT), with the exception of the resolution voted during the July 2014 special session on the Gaza conflict, on which it abstained.
Burkina Faso supported the convening of all three special sessions the Council held in 2014 on country situations. Burkina Faso did not co-sponsor any country resolutions, other than those sponsored by the African Group or the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. Burkina Faso participated in several country-specific debates under Item 10, addressing situations in West and Central Africa. This is a noticeable improvement compared to previous cycles of the Council.
As an observer state in 2015, Burkina Faso should co-sponsor additional country resolutions under Item 4, such as the resolutions on North Korea or Eritrea, and continue its positive efforts to be more vocal during country-specific debates in order to remain a relevant player of the Council.

Support for key joint statements in 2014
Burkina Faso supported all of the Council’s resolutions on Syria and changed its vote on Belarus from abstention to endorsement of the Council’s decision to create a Special Rapporteur and support his work. However, Burkina Faso continued to abstain on the resolution on Iran, as well as the resolutions on Sri Lanka, spoiling its otherwise strong voting record.
Burkina Faso voted in favor of all but one of the resolutions focusing on the human rights situation in Palestine and other occupied Arab territories. In 2012 Burkina Faso abstained on the resolution on follow-up to the UN fact-finding mission on the Gaza conflict.
Burkina Faso co-sponsored 39 country-specific resolutions under agenda items 1, 4, 7 and 10. However, with the exception of the debates on Cote d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso rarely participated in country-specific debates in the Council. Burkina Faso could enhance its engagement in the Council by taking part more regularly in such debates.
Burkina Faso's support for the Council's work on country situations improved during this period. Burkina Faso played a key role in negotiations concerning neighboring countries within its region.
