2012/2013 Analysis

On a positive note, Malaysia supported all the Council’s resolutions focusing on Syria from December 2011 onwards. However, it abstained on all other country resolutions put to the vote, including those on Iran, Belarus and Sri Lanka. Malaysia also regrettably voted against the amendments aimed at improving the Libya resolution in March 2012. Malaysia did not sign any of the key joint statements delivered at the Council on country situations.

Malaysia voted in favor of all the resolutions on the human rights situation in Palestine and other occupied Arab territories.

Malaysia co-sponsored a total of 19 country-specific resolutions under agenda items 1, 7 and 10. Malaysia intervened in some of the Council’s country-specific debates. Malaysia could improve its engagement in the Council by expanding its support for country-specific resolutions under agenda item 4 and positively revisiting its position on country situations such as Iran, Belarus and Sri Lanka.
