Mauritania

Mauritania ended its term as a member of the Council in 2013 with a mixed record regarding the Council's work on country situations.

2012/2013 Analysis

Although Mauritania voted in favor of most of the resolutions on the situation in Syria and the 2012 resolution on Iran, it voted against the two resolutions that were adopted on Sri Lanka. Mauritania also voted against amendments that would have improved the Libya resolution and regrettably abstained on the creation of a Special Rapporteur mandate on Belarus, as well as the 2013 resolution renewing the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on Iran.

Mauritania voted in favor of all the resolutions focusing on the human rights situation in Palestine and other occupied Arab territories.

Mauritania did not sign any of the key joint statements on country situations made at the Council during this period. Mauritania did co-sponsor 41 country-specific resolutions under agenda items 4, 7 and 10 on technical cooperation. Mauritania rarely intervened in the country-specific debates in the Council.
