Universal Periodic Review (UPR)

The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a review mechanism within the Human Rights Council. Every UN member country's human rights record is reviewed during a four-and-a-half-year cycle. The review is carried out by peers. The reviewed country presents its situation and other countries raise questions and make recommendations that the country under review can accept or not. Nongovernmental organizations are given the opportunity to make submissions for each country's review and the UN also submits a report summarizing the UN human rights mechanisms' engagement with the country.
